ADB Report by Pramod Jain.

With increased emphasis on reducing emissions from the power sector, grid-level energy storage can enable larger penetration of renewable energy into the grid.

Grid-level energy storage is likely to dominate the conversation in the power industry in the coming years, just like renewable energy dominated the conversation in the past 2 decades. This report targets investors, developers, utility planners, power sector policy makers, and readers who wish to understand the role energy storage is likely to play in the smart grid of the future. For developing countries, the report provides an introduction to the necessary technical background on energy storage, the role it is likely to play as penetration of renewable energy increases in the grid, and the policy prescriptions to realize the wide range of benefits of energy storage.

Pramod organized a day-long Quantum Leap in Wind deep dive workshop on June 6, 2016 at ADB headquarters in Manila, the Philippines.  The theme was Accelerating Deployments in Emerging Wind Markets.  More than 150 participants attended the workshop.  http://www.asiacleanenergyforum.org/agenda/pre-forum-activities-2016/day-1/wind-power/

Agenda:

The Quantum Leap in Wind Power Development in Asia and the Pacific (QLW) deep dive workshop will focus on: How can emerging wind markets in Asia and the Pacific accelerate wind power development? The ambitious goals and commitments made in COP 21 will be translated into action in the coming years. Wind power provides the lowest cost clean energy technology, as evidenced by falling PPA prices and falling reverse auction prices for wind energy. This workshop promises to bring, from around the world, wind power experts, senior government officials, senior utility officials, wind developers and financiers to share experiences, best practices and insights about wind power development. Presenters will discuss barriers, solutions to overcoming barriers and recommendations for changes to policies, tariffs, interconnection, permitting, land acquisition, financing and others. The workshop will share lessons, best practices and recommendations in order to accelerate wind development. All facets of wind project development will be covered: Prospecting, wind resource assessment, siting/engineering, turbine technology, financing, and others.

“Grid Integration of Wind Power: Best Practices for Emerging Wind Markets” by Pramod Jain and Dr Priyantha Wijayatunga has been published under the ADB Sustainable Development Working Paper Series.  Its focus is on system impact studies to support variable generation--wind and solar. It may download it at:

http://www.adb.org/publications/grid-integration-wind-power-best-practices-wind-markets

The sections of this report are organized to answer specific questions:

  1. What is unique about wind energy with respect to grid integration?
  2. What are the components of grid integration of a Wind Power Plant (WPP) or wind farm?
  3. What is the impact of wind energy on a grid?
  4. What are the best practices for grid integration of wind energy?
  5. What is the cost of wind integration?

Guyana wind measurement project

The Government of Guyana's Public Infrastructure Minister Mr David Patterson reported to the national assembly on renewable energy projects.  Following is a text from http://realfmgy.com/2016/02/12/over-650-homes-will-receive-power-for-the-first-time/:

'With regards to wind energy, Minister Patterson said that GEA continued to monitor and record wind data (speed and direction) at four sites. These, he added, are at Port Mourant, Kumu, Mahdia, and the University of Guyana, “GEA also assisted HECI in selection and evaluation of fifteen potential wind sites along Guyana’s coast where the best four will be chosen to carry out wind measurements.  Negotiations are continuing with the Guyana Wind Farm Inc,” he said.'

IWE performed the evaluation of 15 potential sites and selection of four sites for wind measurements.

System Impact Study of the Eastern Grid of Sumba Island, Indonesia. Steady-State.png

IWE conducted a grid integration study for Sumba.  It was a collaboration with NREL and Winrock.

The following publication has been released by NREL.

Publication Title: System Impact Study of the Eastern Grid of Sumba Island, Indonesia: Steady-State and Dynamic System Modeling for the Integration of One and Two 850-kW Wind Turbine Generators

Link: http://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy16osti/65458.pdf

Abstract: The goal of this project was to study the impact of integrating one and two 850-kW wind turbine generators into the eastern power system network of Sumba Island, Indonesia. A model was created for the 20-kV distribution network as it existed in the first quarter of 2015 with a peak load of 5.682 MW. Detailed data were collected for each element of the network. Load flow, short-circuit, and transient analyses were performed using DIgSILENT PowerFactory 15.2.1....
